Tips for beginner skiers

The 2014/2015 ski season is here and it is very likely that you will be encouraged to try one of all the sports that you can practice on a ski slope. If it is going to be your first time, take a look at these tips so that you can ski knowing the most important aspects to do it safely, without setbacks or disappointments.

These tips originate from the Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation (RFEDI) and it is very convenient to take them into account if you or your children are going to enter the ski slopes for the first time this winter.

1. Sign up for some ski lessons:

In any ski resort there are schools where you can sign up and participate in ski lessons for beginners. It is a highly recommended first step because very experienced instructors will teach you the most important aspects of the sport, basic techniques, advice on equipment and safety, etc. It is a very important process that we recommend not to skip and make the most of it.

2. Rent the material. Don't spend a fortune for the first season:

Many people make the mistake of buying a lot of equipment for a lot of money to take their first steps in these sports, without ever having skied before and without knowing if they are going to like it or if they are going to tolerate it well. The ideal is, the first few times, to rent the equipment and learn to ski well without large outlays . At least until he makes sure that we like skiing, we withstand the effort well and we progress adequately. If you are sure, you have learned a lot and you want to repeat it, consider investing money in buying your own equipment.

3. Train your fitness:

It is recommended to have a minimally acceptable physical condition to practice sports in the snow. We are dealing with anaerobic sports, but a day of skiing in the snow is very hard: you will walk a few kilometers, you will have to climb slopes, carry your equipment, endure bumps and falls, etc. Maintaining an adequate physical tone and even training your resistance before going skiing is highly advisable.

4. Respect the rules and signs:

Respecting the signs is a custom that, if we take it seriously, can avoid unpleasantness. Do not take risks and do not venture down the mountain if you are not fully familiar with your skis. It is not superfluous to take out insurance for what may happen.

If you are a beginner, try not to harm others, try to remain supervised or controlled by an experienced skier, reconnoitre the terrain before skiing in the area, do not stand in the middle of the slope or in places with little visibility and always obey the indications on the track.

5. Review the material at least twice a year:

Above all, ski bindings must be carefully checked before starting to ski. And in general, all the equipment must be well checked. In addition, the use of a helmet is essential, although not mandatory, but highly recommended for your safety.

And you? Will this be the first year that you dare to ski? If so, follow these tips and enjoy the snow. And if you are an experienced skier and want to share some more advice with us, don't hesitate!
