We all know the most common winter sports like skiing, snowboarding or ice skating. But there are plenty of wacky sports out there if you want something a little more different.

The most curious winter sports

  • Snow Kayaking: This can also be done on dunes if you prefer warmer environments. You only need the same tools as in the most common version, the kayak and paddles, and a snowy slope to descend.

  • Snowsurfing: There are two types of snowsurfing: one combines surfing and the other combines windsurfing with snow. The main difference between the two is that one has a sail and the other doesn't, which makes it very similar to snowboarding.

  • Ice Cross downhill: the fastest sport in the world, participants in these ice races skate down complicated circuits, wearing hockey protection, and can reach distances of up to 50km.

  • Yukigassen: the Japanese snowball fight, each team is made up of seven players who throw snowballs at each other in this pitched battle. It has now become a very popular sport, especially in northern Europe.

  • Skijoring: This sport involves a horse, a dog or dogs, or a motor vehicle pulling a person on skis. It used to be a typical means of transport in Scandinavia and Alaska.

  • Wok racing: This has developed a lot in Germany as a form of television entertainment. The name comes from the fact that the device on which the participants slide is a Chinese wok.
