It is a special moment because The Spanish snowboarders are in shape and aiming for everything. We take a look at the Spanish players who will be participating in this World Championship.
The Spanish snowboardcross squad (SBX) of the RFEDI made up of Regino Hernández (winner of three World Championships in Gangow in 2009, La Molina in 2011 and in Stoneham in 2013) and Lucas Eguibar and Laro Herrero (two World Championships: La Molina in 2011 and Stoneham in 2013), will compete on January 15 and 16 to win the SBX event. The San Sebastian-born snowboarder's goal is to qualify among the top 15. Hernández, from Sierra Nevada, meanwhile, wants to do his best, and after his good results last season, his motivation is to be among the top eight. And Cantabrian Herrero also aims to improve and finish in the top positions; he believes it would be good to finish among the top five or ten in the championship. Israel Planas, the team's coach and trainer, thinks that the athletes are arriving in great form after a well-worked preseason.
Let us not forget that Both Hernández in 2011 and Eguibar in 2013 were Junior SBX World Champions and in 2014 both climbed onto the podium in the World Cup of this specialty. So they're aiming for everything in this new event. Regino participated in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, and the three of them coincided in Sochi 2014, where the San Sebastian native earned an Olympic diploma by finishing seventh.
Queralt Castellet (three World Championships: Arosa 2007, Gangow 2009 and Stoneham 2013) will compete in the halfpipe event on January 16 and 17. The snowboarder from Sabadell participated, at just 17 years old, in her first Olympic Games in Turin 2006 (she also participated in the Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 Olympics) and since then has become a reference in the halfpipe discipline. A strong performance is expected from her at these World Championships and a good result after the preseason she has done in New Zealand and her current training in Switzerland. She assures that she will give it her all and that she will try to be at the top of the podium.
María Hidalgo, the youngest Spanish member of the team at 17, will be participating in her first World Championships and will compete in the slopestyle event between January 19 and 21. The Catalan athlete's goals are to participate, compete well, and enjoy the experience of this important event.
