At the crowded start in Arriondas, the winning K-2 had some problems starting its journey among the 644 participating boats (with 895 palmists from more than seventeen countries around the world) which allowed Martínez and José Julián Becerro to take the first position together with the South Africans Andrew Birkett and Greg Low.
With several thousand people participating in the "Canoe Festival" from the riverbanks, the paddlers faced the twenty-kilometer course through a channel with a high flow rate that made it difficult to approach the race record, set in 2009 at 1 hour 1 minute and 14 seconds.
The equality between the leading group was present until the last kilometer, where we could see a great change of pace by Walter Bouzán and Alvaro Fiuza, which broke the group and allowed them to impose themselves in first position with ease in the sprint over Emilio Merchán and Iván Alonso, who achieved second position ahead of the South African pair in a time similar to that of the winners.
