Jorge Egocheaga, the hero of the 14 eight thousand
Mountaineer and doctor, originally from Asturias, has 14 eight-thousanders to his credit. In May of this year he crowned Kangchenjunga , the last peak over 8,000 meters he had left to conquer. It is Jorge Egocheaga, a true hero of the mountains and, without a doubt, a true mountaineering star, who will go down in history for his talent, feats and great career.
The Asturian mountaineer gave a talk at the beginning of the current month of November in Plasencia. Called "Reflections", Jorge gave his personal vision of mountaineering and talked about his experiences after climbing the highest mountains on the globe . Egocheaga experienced difficult times in 2008 when his wife, Joëlle Brubpacher, and his best friend, Iñaki Ochoa, lost their lives while climbing Annapurna During the talk he recalled the events and dedicated his feat to them, assuring that "if he could get rid of me (referring to the eight thousand) to give them to them, he would do it." In addition to his facet of conquering peaks, Jorge has shown his committed side to his colleagues by taking part in numerous rescue operations, such as that of José Manuel Buenaga, also from Asturias, in 2003 during a climb to Gasherbrum , a climber who fell into the void without the rest of the team noticing. Or in that of the mountaineer Juanjo Garra, who died 15 minutes after Jorge Egocheaga located him and accessed where the man from Lleida was. A true mountaineer committed to mountaineering, with a feat to his credit at the level of very few.
