She is one of the best surfers in our country. And for a couple of months she has been part of our team.
Lucia Martino She was born in Gijón, in the province of Asturias, and for this reason, from a very young age she felt very connected to the sea. Today she is a celebrity in Spanish surfing and with good reason, since her sporting and extra-sporting successes are numerous.
The Asturian began surfing at the age of 11 and has never been separated from her board since. Her ability to catch waves has earned her a large number of awards and achievements since the beginning of her career. Among them, we can highlight her achievement as Spanish Surfing Champion in 2010, 2013 (runner-up) and 2014; third place in Billabong Sopelana ProJunior in 2011; first place in Airwalk Lacanau ProJunior (France) in 2012; and third place in Franito ProJunior in 2014. She is also number 45 in the women's World Surf League.
According to Lucia MartinoA surfer's day starts at 8am and requires 4 hours a day, combined with 5 days of physical training per week. Professional surfing is a very individual sport, the only thing that is needed is a personal trainer and everything else (registration for the championships, flights and hotels, and management of their image and personal brand) is managed by the surfer herself. The Surf Federation does not have as much money as other sports such as football, so the athletes have to cover all the expenses.
The Asturian has travelled the entire sea and although Gijón is in her heart, she admits that she still finds it difficult to get in when the water is a little cold. She also holds the title of 'instagram surfer', but she is only one of the many who has accumulated her board along with the title of Champion of Spain. This is the life of a true surfer, who admits that her waves have the song 'Plage' by The Crystal Fighters as a soundtrack.
Lucia Martino She is clear about it: “Being a surfer is as cool as it seems.” Although her job consists of training, training, and training, the athlete recognizes that traveling is one of the most interesting parts of her job. Likewise, the worst thing for Lucía Martiño is winter training, since it is very cold and the paradisiacal beaches and heat do not last all year.
Starting to surf was like a game, and he liked it. This is how he responded Lucia Martino She told Cosmopolitan magazine about how her life story with her beloved sport, surfing, began: “I started surfing because I liked it. From there, I went to some competitions with the school where I was learning and I started to get good at it. I was chosen for the Spanish Junior Team to go to the European Championships when I was fourteen and I started to get more involved in that world. It was on the European Pro Junior Circuit, where I came third, where I had to make the decision of whether I wanted to continue with surfing or not. My decision was to continue.
Although he has traveled the beaches of almost the entire world looking for the most incredible waves, Lucia Martino She knows that Spain is an incredible country and when she has had to spend long periods away from home she has realised how lucky she is to be from Spain. The Asturian has a tattoo that says “live in the moment”. For her, that is her mantra.
Lucia Martino She doesn't want to think about the future and prefers to go on the go, but always related or linked to surfing. If she leaves competition in the future, the athlete wants to continue with her trips, and for them to be related in some way or another to sport.
Has Lucía Martiño noticed any differences between men's and women's surfing?
The Asturian is clear about it. She believes that although the boys may be stronger and their turns are different, there are more and more women in the world of waves. Her role model is Kelly Slater, a surfer who has accumulated numerous World Championship titles and is still, even at 45 years old, very involved in the world of surfing and competition.
When Lucía isn't catching waves she likes to spend time with her family and friends in her hometown, Gijón. She loves Asturias and loves coming home to spend a few days relaxing with her loved ones, and who doesn't like to relax with the ones they love the most?
We would also like to highlight that our professional athlete and member of our Indian Crew is not only an athlete: the Asturian has combined her professional life in surfing with studying for a degree in Business Administration at the University of La Rioja, so it is clear to us that Lucía is not only successful in her sport, but in many other aspects of her life. Someone daring who has fought for her dreams and has never been afraid of the new challenges she has encountered along the way.
For all these reasons, Lucía Martiño is a clear #IndianSpirit and we could say that she was born to surf (among many other things).
