Mountaineer and doctor, originally from Asturias, he has 14 eight-thousanders to his name. In May of this year he summited Kangchenjunga, the last peak above 8,000 meters that remained to be conquered. It is Jorge Egocheaga, A true mountain hero and, without a doubt, a true mountaineering genius., who will go down in history for his talent, achievements and great career.
The Asturian mountaineer gave a talk at the beginning of November in Plasencia. Titled "Reflections," Jorge gave his personal view of mountaineering and spoke about his experiences after the crowning of the the highest mountains in the world.
Egocheaga lived through difficult times in 2008 when His wife, Joëlle Brubpacher, and his best friend, Iñaki Ochoa, lost their lives during an ascent of Annapurna..
During the talk, he recalled the events and dedicated his feat to them, stating that "if I could take it off my hands (referring to the eight-thousanders) and give it to them, I would."
In addition to his role as a conqueror of peaks, Jorge has shown his commitment to his colleagues by participating in numerous rescue operations., such as that of another Asturian, José Manuel Buenaga, in 2003, during a climb to Gasherbrum, a mountaineer who fell into his void without the rest of his team noticing. Or that of mountaineer Juanjo Garra, who died 15 minutes after Jorge Egocheaga located him and gained access to the Lleida native.
A true mountaineer committed to mountaineering, with a feat to his credit that very few others can match.
