What do you know about snowboarding? Do you know where it was invented? Where can you practice it and what are its modalities? If you haven't been able to answer these questions, then keep reading our new blog post!!
BEGINNINGS
The development of snowboarding comes from other sliding sports such as skateboarding or surfing.
In 1965, engineer Sherman Poppen built the first snowboard for his daughter in Muskegon, Michigan. It was a wooden board with no foot grips and a rope at the front to help maintain balance. Brunswick Company decided to develop and sell this new concept, which was a relative sales success in the 1960s and 1970s.
Also during this time, ski-amateur surfer Dimitrije Milovich designed a board the size of skis but much wider and capable of "surfing" powder snow, known as the Winterstick.
When did you arrive in Spain?
Although Sherman Poppen invented snowboarding in the United States in the 1960s and it became popular in the 1980s, it did not arrive in Spain until the early 1990s.
What are its modalities?
The best known are Freestyle,
- Half-pipe
- Slopestyle: jumps, rails and boxes. It will be an Olympic discipline starting with the 2014 Winter Olympics.
- Big Air
- Jibbingd
- Quarterpipe
What's yours?
The last Spanish Freestyle and Snowboard Championships (Sierra Nevada – April 2013) had Manex Azula and María Hidalgo as winners in Snowboard. Congratulations!
Where can I practice it?
Take advantage and escape to the best resorts: Baqueira-Beret (you will find all the information in my previous post), Astún, Candanchú, Formigal, Cerler and Sierra Nevada.
You can also enjoy the snowparks they have set up. They are very well worked by great shapers. In our opinion, the best is the one in Formigal. The atmosphere among riders is also unbeatable.
