Snowboards: what are they made of and what materials are they made of?
The universe of winter sports equipment and accessories evolves very quickly, season after season. In fact, writing an article about the composition of a snowboard and its materials is risky as there is a danger that the content will quickly become outdated. In any case, the materials primarily used to make snowboards change at a slower rate than in the world of alpine skiing. Let's see.
The first thing that we must take into account and be clear about, when studying the materials that make up snowboards, are the different parts into which it is divided. Take note, they are as follows: starting from the bottom up we have the base, the outer edge (which is usually known as the edge of the board), the core and finally the top sheet.
The base of the table is made of plastic materials. It is usually made of Ptex, a type of plastic that is very easy to repair for all those bumps and scratches that the board will suffer during its use. This is the part that slides on snow or ice.
The metal edges, or edges, are made of stainless steel. They fulfill the function of allowing the board to grip the snow when we lean our weight to one side or the other during a descent.
The core of the table, which is its main body, is made of polished plywood. Apparently, each brand keeps as its great secret the type of wood it uses for the core of its boards. The materials or woods used for the cores of the boards can differ greatly from one brand to another.
The tables also have a series of steel inserts on which a fiberglass or epoxy sheet is placed.
Finally, the board has a thin upper layer that, in most cases, usually has screen-printed designs or drawings; although there are also tables with motifs and anagrams printed on them.
